Sometimes you just do NOT want to be right about something, and many of us did NOT want to be right about the list of recalled items expanding over time, nor did we want to be right about the tainted wheat gluten making it into human food processing plants. Yet here we are with yet ANOTHER recall notice from the FDA today, added to the alarming report this week from the Boston Globe.
The recall today affects another branded and private-label pet food manufacturer, Sunshine Mills Inc., and includes: Nurture Chicken & Rice, Nurture Lamb & Rice, Pet Life Large, Pet Life Extra Large, Pet Life Large Variety, Pet Life Large Peanut Butter, Lassie Lamb and Rice (AKA Natural Way Dog Biscuits baked with Lamb & Rice), Pet Life People Pleasers Dog Treats, Companion’s Best Multi Flavor Biscuit, Stater Brothers Large Biscuit, Ol’Roy Peanut Butter Biscuit, Ol’Roy 4 Flavor Large Biscuit, Ol’Roy Puppy Biscuit, Champion Breed Peanut Butter Biscuit, Champion Breed Large Biscuit, Perfect Pals Large Biscuit, Stater Brothers Large Biscuit. I will add the code information with other recalled pet food information on the Pet food recall info/posts page.
I noticed the FDA has revamped their Pet Food Recall page, which is a sad sign to me that this situation is going to be with us for some time. I also found this Recalls, Market Withdrawals and Safety Alerts page, which I hadn’t seen before. Oh, and can I just vent for a moment and ask all the affected companies and the FDA to STOP SAYING that other products are safe and we do not need to worry! Kind of hard for us to buy into that idea since practically every other day we’re getting news of more items being recalled. Just tell us, once and for all, the names of all companies which received the tainted wheat gluten so WE, the consumers, can make our own decisions about what is and isn’t safe. Simple request, in my opinion.
***Just got another recall notice (American Bullie A.B. Bull Pizzle Puppy Chew and Dog Chew [made from all American beef pizzle]) from the FDA in my mail, but this is another SALMONELLA-related one (not Menu Foods-related), similar to this one from 3/25.***

I truly believe in a raw food diet for my dog. He’s extremely healthy & energetic as a result. Where I live there a few places that sell BARF and Raw Food diets which are sold frozen. Just thaw and serve. I also have the added bonus of not worrying about what’s in his food since it’s all natural, human-grade meat, veggies, fruit, etc.
I’m very saddened by the terrible suffering of pets because of these recent problems with commercial foods. People should have a choice what to feed their pets and be able to trust the companies that make the foods for them.
Let’s hope the manufacturers start keeping a more careful eye on the ingredients they choose to purchase to make their foods and we can all get back to the business of enjoying our pets, not worrying about them.

Thank goodness for small miracles, right Caroldee? Phew!
Mary, thanks for the heads up on the Natural Way Dog Biscuits baked with Lamb & Rice, sold by Natural Way. I found the Natural Way web site and saw that that product had been recalled, but didn’t see it on the Sunshine Mills recall list. I checked the recall list codes [Lassie Lamb and Rice Biscuit-26 oz. -45352-07005-Plant code & Best by::RB 30708, RB 31908], against the codes that Natural Way gave on their web site and found that the codes are the same. So what Natural Way calls their “Natural Way Dog Biscuits baked with Lamb & Rice”, IS what is listed on the recall list as “Lassie Lamb and Rice Biscuit”. Talk about confusing for the consumer. I have added the AKA info to my blog entry, so hopefully that will help some folks. Kind of makes you wonder what OTHER products have confusion surrounding them like that one did…argh!
Karen, thanks for sharing what works for you and your pets. I think the more we all share our own stories, the more informed we’ll all be about what the options are out there. The only things I would remind everyone thinking of changing their pet’s diet is to REALLY research the options first, pro and con, and also to talk with your veterinarian. Any sudden change in diet may cause digestive upset for pets, so a change should usually be over time. Of course that slow change over time goes out the window if it involves ANY of the recalled products.
